Maturity Level concept using Automotive SPICE

CL & ML : Differences

Characteristics
Capability Level (CL)
Maturity Level (ML)
Result Applicability
Process
Organization unit
Scope
Process & CL
§   Any number of processes can be selected (mostly – VDA Scope).
§   CL can be defined for respective process.
§   Pre-defined set of processes for respective ML
Scope
Project
§   Single project (mostly)
OR
§   Multiple projects
§   Class 1: 4 instances (Minimum)
§   Class 2: 2 instances (Minimum)
§   Multiple projects to represent “organization unit” appropriately.
§   Minimum number of sample shall satisfy “Class” of assessment rule.
Rating Aggregation
§   No aggregation within project (mostly)
§   For multiple projects - aggregation as per rule (R1/R2/R3) can be applied.
§   Aggregation is done as rule rating rule
o   R1 – Rate BP/GP & aggregate
o   R2 – Rate PA & aggregate

CL & ML Assessment : Steps

#
Capability Level (CL)
Maturity Level (ML)
1
§  Identify project (or Projects)
§  Define assessment scope
o   ML (Predefined process set get selected)
o   Class of assessment
2
§  Define assessment scope
o   Processes – as per project(s) development scope
o   CL for respective processes
§  Define rating rule
o   R1: Rate BP/GP & aggregate
o   R2: Rate PA & aggregate
3
§  Define rating rule
o   R3: Rate PA & no aggregation (mostly used)
o   R2: Rate PA & aggregate
o   R1: Rate BP/GP & aggregate
§  Select projects (sampling) to represent OU & satisfy rule of “Class of assessment”
o   Class 1 : minimum 4 instances
o   Class 2: minimum 2 instances
4
§  Perform assessment as per #2
§  Perform assessment s per #3
5
§  Derive process capability as per #3 & report the result
§  Derive ML rating as per#2 & report the result
